(OCT 21) Ballroom Boxing at Michael’s Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie, MD is back again with the same fan-friendly show all of those who have attended have come to know, and a new addition to the behind the scenes roster with a new Director of Boxing Operations as well.
Ballroom Boxing is pleased to introduce Tony Saunders as the new Director of Boxing Operations. As many already know, Tony is nothing new to the sporting world. Tony went straight out of high school to sign as an amateur free agent with Major League Baseball’s Florida Marlins in 1992. In 1997, he was drafted as the first pick in the by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the expansion draft, going on to pitch for the franchise until 2000, when he was sidelined by injury. Making his comeback in January of this year, the left-hander signed with the Baltimore Orioles only to again be aggravated by injury. This time Tony chose to retire from baseball and ended his career with an ERA of 4.56.
With the ending of his baseball career meant the beginning of his next, the Director of Boxing Operations for Ballroom Boxing. Tony recognizes the Ballroom as what has been referred to as “The Best Club Show In America,” and promises not to change how the Ballroom runs, but to maintain its high standards of entertainment. Like the old cliché says, if it’s not broke- don’t fix it.
The next installment for Ballroom Boxing kicks off November 10 with a rematch of former Ballroom combatants Martinus Clay, 9-9-1 (3), and Keenan Collins, 7-1-1 (7). In their first Ballroom brawl, Clay and Collins fought to a disputed draw in a six-round welterweight match. Both are determined not to let that happen again as they square off in a scheduled eight-rounder.
Also scheduled to fight will be Ronald Boyd, 2-1 (0), who recently fought on the Tyson-McBride undercard at the MCI Center in Washington, DC. Boyd will be facing off with debuting James Frank in a four-round junior lightweight bout. Purnell Jackson, 1-0 (1), also faces a fighter making his professional debut, David Derby, in a four-round welterweight match; Calvin Dixon, 2-0-1 (0), squares off with Sean Williams in a cruiserweight battle; junior welterweight Feliberto Nieto, 1-2 (1) faces 0-1-1 Jonathan Jones.
