Tenge Defends WBF World Title Against Szabados

If the action in the ring lives up to the “Queens of War” billing which has been attached to the event, fans are in for a treat when World Boxing Federation (WBF) Womens World Super Welterweight champion Noni Tenge defends her title against Hungary´s Szilvia Szabados on Friday March 18.  Tenge, who won the WBF world title last December with a unanimous decision over compatriot Julie Tshabalala, will clash with Szabados at the Durban International Convention Centre in South Africa, on a show promoted by Mileham & Malinga. As one of the most accomplished female boxers in the sport, Tenge has compiled an impressive 15-1-1 (10) record and captured WBF, IBF and WBA world titles at Welterweight before moving up to Super Welterweight for the Tshabalala encounter last year. “A Ring of Their Own” Deserves Better By Bernie McCoy

(APR 26) I finally found "A Ring of Their Own". It took me almost as long as it took the sport of Women's boxing to get it's own TV show. The problem of female boxers getting TV exposure has been well documented, but in my case the problem of finding "A Ring of Their Own" was directly related to the fact that it is being broadcast in near obscurity on the Metro Channel in New York. The Metro Channel is a low tier cable channel, positioned slightly above public access outlets and substantially below the major sports channels such as ESPN and Fox Sports. "A Ring of Their Own" deserves much better. In addition to being the first TV show dedicated, exclusively, to the female boxing, the show manages to pack more boxing action into two hours than any existing show on the air. Additionally, the Read more [...]

Not According to the Script Bernie McCoy

(APR 9) It was all set for the perfect Hollywood ending: Maureen Shea, as famous as the sparring partner for Hillary Swank during the actress' preparation for her starring role in "Million Dollar Baby" as she was as an up-and-coming amateur fighter, was in the finals of the New York Golden Gloves, one bout away from a title. Not only that, Shea, in a wonderful "back story", was a Irish fighter in a featured fight at Madison Square Garden, or the Theater at the Garden, where the Golden Gloves have been held in recent years. An Irish fighter featured at the Garden is a tradition going back, at the very least, to the 1940s and Billy Graham, the Greenwich Village welterweight, not the preacher. Hillary Swank, this year's Academy Award recipient for Best Actress, had jetted in for the fight Read more [...]

One on One Exclusive Interview with Tonya Harding!

(OCT 24, 2003) Interview by Sue TL Fox:   WBAN recently met up on Oct. 15,  with Tonya Harding, her trainer, Paul Brown, and Linda Lewis at Grand Gym, in Portland, Oregon.  That particular day, Harding was ill, but still came into the gym and spoke with WBAN and worked out with Brown. Harding has now been training with Brown for about 12 weeks, and feels that she is going in the right direction with this noted trainer. TL Fox:  WBAN had been told that in about 1998-1999, which was much earlier that the Celebrity Match with Paula Jones that you were considering becoming a pro boxer, is there any truth to that rumor? Tonya: I  had offers for wrestling, but I do not believe I had any offers for boxing. TL Fox:   How exactly did you get involved in the celebrity-boxing segment Read more [...]
