Bornea Edges Enriquez For WBF International Crown
January 16, 2014

In what was the first WBF championship fight in the Philippines since the WBF was reestablished in 2009, 18-year-old Jake Bornea won the vacant WBF International Flyweight title on January 14th General Santos City.  Bornea won the title by a split decision over  Michael Enriquez. Bornea started best, boxing from the outside and using his speed and footwork to unsettle Enriques. In round three Enriquez (22) managed to turn the tide when he caught Bornea with a big left hook that buckled the youngster’s knees, and from that point it looked as if things would go his way. However, after three rounds where Bornea appeared to be a fading man, and Enriquez was constantly putting on the pressure, Bornea got his second win in round six and again managed to get his tactics working and score effectively with the jab. After ten wonderful rounds of action, where an enthusiastic crowd at the packed venue got more than their money’s worth, judge Rome Fordaliza and Alberto Brembot Dulalas scored the fight 97-93 and 99-91 for Bornea, while Alberto Heramil had it 98-92 for Enriquez. Referee was Ramuel Ovalo. With the victory, and his professional careers first title, Jake Bornea improved his record to 5-0 (3), while Michael Enriquez must come to terms with his first loss and drops to 7-1-1 (4). The fight was promoted by Sanman Promotions in cooperation with JM Promotions.

LanardoTyner Defeats Angel Hernandez
January 12, 2014
Source/WBU

Detroit born Lanardo Tyner made a victorious homecoming on Friday night, by dramatically stopping Angel Hernandez in the tenth round, to become crowned the new World Boxing Union (WBU) Welterweight World Champion at the Naser Beydoun’s Darkside Productions promoted RUMBLE ON THE RIVER event, which took place at the Masonic Temple in Detroit.  Tyner dominated the opening stanza, working the body of Hernandez throughout, his supremacy vindicated late on when he sent Hernandez to the canvas, albeit briefly as Hernandez was up before the count had even began.   The visit to the deck clearly awakened Hernandez, who more than equaled everything Tyner threw at him from that point on. From around the midway point both men threw away any semblance of a defense they had and just went toe-to-toe, in pure Gatti-Ward style.  Hernandez threw everything he had at Tyner, scoring big with the sensationally powerful combinations he constantly fired in Tyner’s direction.  Tyner on the other hand was taking advantage of the space afforded by Hernandez’s all out attacks, by dispatching pin point accurate powerful shots at every opportunity.  Both men gave their all throughout every single round, but Hernandez had landed far more shots, so much so that going into the tenth round it was him that was ahead on the judges scorecards. Tyner threw everything but the kitchen sink at Hernandez, in an effort to redress the balance, Hernandez responded in kind and by the second minute both men were almost out on their feet, having both expanded so much effort. Then with just seconds remaining on the clock, Tyner mustered up enough energy to let rip with a massive right, that sent Hernandez down and out, much to the delight of the big home crowd.  In victory, Tyner added the coveted WBU Welterweight World Championship to his ever growing trophy cabinet.  Following his presenting the WBU Championship Belt, World Boxing Union President Don ‘Moose’ Lewis spoke briefly about the sensational fight. “From the point of the weigh-in and the ‘respectful’ trash talking between Tyner and Hernandez-I knew we had the making of a “Fight of the Year” already.  Both boxers have never backed away from an opponent and both are decent people, so the WBU had a fight that was a winner no matter whose had was raised.

World Boxing Federation Enters The Philippines
January 10, 2014

The WBF has started 2014 with a bang, making history with its first title fight in the Philippines as Sanman Promotions, Peter Maniatis Events and JM Promotions will be staging a clash between undefeated rising stars for the vacant WBF International Flyweight title on Tuesday January 14.  22-year-old Michael Enriquez, who brings a 7-0-1 (4) record, takes on fellow countryman Jake Bornea (4-0, 3 KOs) at the Oval Plaza Covered Court in General Santos City, in a bout that also doubles for the vacant Philippines Flyweight crown. With the WBF World Flyweight title scheduled to be contested in South Africa at the end of February, Enriquez has his eyes firmly set on challenging the winner, and is not concerned about possibly having to travel for the opportunity. However, he obviously needs to get by Bornea first. With the prospect of the great Manny Pacquiao being ringside, along with a sold out and passionate crowd, both boxers are highly motivated to not only put on a good show for the fans, but to keep the outstanding reputation of Filipino boxers intact. The Michael “Blade” Enriquez vs. Jake “Bonbon” Bornea World Boxing Federation International Flyweight title fight is the main event of a massive twelve-bout card, with the undercard featuring some of the area’s most talented prospects.

Kennedy then challenged the highly respected Guillermo Rigondeaux for the WBA Super Bantamweight crown on June 9, 2012 as part of the Manny Pacquiao – Timothy Bradley Pay Per View undercard. Although Kennedy came up short, he showed heart by continuing to get off the canvas until the bout was stopped in 5th round.  Since that defeat, Kennedy has fought very well as he moved up to Jr. Lightweight and has scored wins over Carlos Vinan and in his last bout when he fought through a broken jaw but still was able to win a 10 round unanimous decision over Joselito Collado (13-2) on August 24, 2013 in Atlantic City. “I decided to sign with Mark after what I have seen what he has done with his other fighters”, said Kennedy.  “He takes good care of his fighters and I don’t mean with money. I know that Mark and my promoter Russell Peltz are on the same page and have a good plan going forward.”, finished Kennedy.  “We are very happy to have Teon in the fold and part of our team”, said Cipparone. “He is a proven fighter who is just a couple fights removed from fighting for a world championship. Shumenov Celebrates his Fourth Anniversary as World Champion Next Month
January 1, 2014

LAS VEGAS- WBA/IBA Light Light Heavyweight World Champion Beibut Shumenov celebrates his fourth anniversary as world champion next month but he really didn’t arrive on the worldwide boxing scene until this past December 14th in his SHOWTIME debut. Shumenov set a light heavyweight record for capturing a world title in the fewest career fights, 10, when he won (Jan. 10, 2010) a 12-round decision over Gabriel Campillo in Las Vegas. Shumenov’s fifth successful world title defense was an impressive performance over previously undefeated challenger Tomas “Tomi Kid” Kovacs (23-1, 14 KOs) on “Danger Zone,” headlined by Marcus Maidana’s upset of Adrian Broner, at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. Shumenov, the 2004 Kazakhstan Olympian who lives in Las Vegas, dropped Kovacs at the end of round one with a picture-perfect left hook to the European champion’s chin. The powerful Kazak briefly switched to southpaw in the second round, decking Kovacs with a left uppercut, and referee Rafael Ramos halted the fight at the 2:55 mark of the third round after a battered Kovacs was knocked down for the third time in the fight.  Although he hadn’t fought in more than a year, Shumenov showed little ring rust, if any at all, as he patiently stalked Kovacs, who Shumenov expected to be aggressive from the opening bell. “From watching some of his past fights,” the 30-year-old Shumenov explained, “I expected him to come forward and fight inside. I was prepared to counter him, but he fought defensively and I had to set him up. I feinted a lot more than in my past fights, moved better, and I eventually got him. “My goal has always been to unify and Golden Boy and Showtime are going to give me that opportunity. We tried to make a couple of unifications and different fights that for one reason or another fell through. We tried to made unification fights with [Nathan] Cleverly and [Chad] Dawson when they held belts, but they weren’t interested in fighting me. I tried to unify with a scheduled fight against [then WBO champion Juergen] Braehmer but he ran out of town three days before our fight.” (photo by Tom Casino / SHOWTIME)
