Team Wilkey were triumphant once again on their last outing on Miranda Carter’s ‘Stand and Deliver’ show at York Hall in London on Sunday 23rd February. All five boxers trained by Alec Wilkey picked up wins to add to their record, notably Francis Maina capturing the Bronze British Masters Title and Brett Saggs winning his debut professional bout.

Trainer Alec Wilkey and Francis Maina

Francis Maina (2-3-1) and Ideh Ochuko (6-11) provided chief support in a thrilling Bronze British Masters Title bout over 8 rounds at Lightweight. Former European kickboxing champion Maina used his jab well throughout the bout and caught Ochuko with numerous straight right hands, yet the champion Ochuko was not fazed and produced some good work of his own in spells. Towards the end of the bout Francis began to dominate the action more and it was no surprise when he was awarded the decision 77-75 to take the belt from Ochuko.

Areti Mastrodouka in action

The action kicked off with female southpaw fighter Areti Mastrodouka (6-0), who advanced to 6 straight wins in the pro ranks with a convincing points victory over Karina Kopinska ( in a 6 round Super Featherweight bout. ‘The Master’ dominated the fight against a durable opponent with her straight left hand, winning it by 60-55 points aiding in her pursuit of a World Title.

Johnny Coyle gets decision

Johnny Coyle (3-1-0) remained unbeaten with a points win over Lewis van Poetsch (3-7), with the Stanford-le-Hope southpaw producing some smart boxing. Coyle dominated the action forcing van Poetsch onto the ropes on numerous occasions as he sunk in hooks to the body and head with the judge awarding Coyle each round with a score of 40-36.

On his debut performance Light-Middleweight Brett Saggs notched up a victory by beating Costas Osben (3-15-1) 40-36 in a tough 4 rounder. The tall, rangy boxer from Maldon used his jab well to set up attacks and a good work rate to nullify Osben’s returning right hands with the future looking bright for the former Chelmsford ABC man.
Prizefighter semi-finalist Eren Arif (5-1) continued to impress as he stepped up a level to beat Michael Mooney (4-4) in an exciting 6 round light-welterweight bout. Arif used a high guard and fought in short bursts with his trademark hooks to wear down his opponent with both fighters smiling at each other in between the brawling. Arif got the decision 60-55.
